Roll up, roll up to our wonderful CARNIVAL/DISCO Night – Friday 24th October from 6pm –8pm at the gym/back oval. We will have an evening of dancing and laughter. There will be a few surprises and some prizes for best costumes and dancers. You may impress us with a hoola hoop or create a magnificent mask – there will be something for everyone! Most importantly it is an opportunity to catch up with our wonderful community. Bring a picnic and a picnic blanket or chairs to sit on – we hope you can make it!
Email Kathryn at kathryn@jonestid.com.au if you have any questions.

Dear 5/6 Families,
We would like to invite you to our Change Expo. This Expo will present the ideas, influences and creations the students have developed during their investigation into,
“What drives and motivates change?”
Some students have worked on ‘pop-ups’, investigating what it means to affect change in the attitudes, behaviours and understandings of others. Another group of students have investigated people who have made change through their significant contributions to society. The final group have explored various changes that have occurred in society through invention, shifting paradigms and adaptation.
The Expo is being held in the 5/6 neighbourhood on Thursday 18th of September and will be open to the parents anytime between 5-6pm.
It is encouraged that all students attend the Expo at this time, to present their learning to the parent community. The doors will be open at 4:50 for students to come in and prepare for their presentations.
We apologise for the late notice of this invitation, however we look forward to seeing you there!
~ 5/6 Team
(Robert, Tash, Anna, Tim & Kate and all of the 5/6 students)

Thank you,
Isaac and Giuls

From CGTRader’s website:
3D Printing Kids Challenge: Learn, Dream, Create
If your brain is bubbling with ideas, you have a flair for technology and have the guts to go head to head with other young geniuses like yourself, take this challenge and see your inventions come to life.
Do you see ways how to improve the school life, home and leisure time using 3D-printed objects? Have you developed an inspiring toy concept or come up with a brilliant invention for everyday problems? Then go ahead and design it. The easiest way to develop a truly inventive idea for your project is to find something that causes trouble, a daily problem that gets people frustrated, something that requires a creative approach – then put your mind to it and offer a 3D printing-inspired solution.
We will welcome a wide range of good quality 3D printable models from juniors aged 14 & under.
Let your imagination roam free – learn, dream, create!

As part of Book Week the students will be participating in a whole school mini inquiry, commencing on Monday the 11th of August and concluding with a special 2.30 pm assembly on Thursday 21st of August. A big part of the inquiry will be to investigate, through book talk, how readers connect to the stories they read, and the kinds of personal, social, cultural and literary assumptions the writer is making about their reader. A reader’s prior knowledge and experiences support readers in responding to the meanings of the texts they read. Book talk not only encourages students to engage in and respond to the books they are reading, but by listening to the varied experiences of their peers, also enriches their own experience of the text. As a community of readers, we would like to extend an invitation for parents to come into the neighbourhood of their child and share a book that resonated with them at a similar age. Please let your child’s teachers know if you would like to participate in sharing your experience with the children by arranging a suitable time for this to occur.

The way kids are punished has been a big talking point over the past few weeks. Two comments started it all. First, the National Children’s Commissioner said putting kids in a ‘naughty corner’ might go against their rights. Then, a national education advisor said he would support the return of corporal punishment in some schools.

To streamline the ICT support and resolution system, students now have more direct access to the school technician three hours per week. The allocated times are at 9-10 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. In order to see the technician a student will simply need to fill out a very short form outlining the complication and then see a teacher to let us know. A Form and further information is available from Robert in the 5/6 Neighbourhood.

Thursday is World Blood Donor Day. Only 1 in 30 Aussies actually donate.
Do you think it should be compulsory for people in Australia who are 18+ to donate blood?
Post your response on your e-portfolio 🙂

This week is Reconciliation Week, a time when all Australians are encouraged to celebrate Indigenous culture. And a big part of that culture are traditional languages. Did you know hundreds existed in Australia before European settlement? Some are still alive while others are starting to be forgotten.
WHY IS RECONCILIATION WEEK IMPORTANT TO AUSTRALIANS AS A COMMUNITY?
