You might think of lawn bowls as a game that only old people play but it’s actually something that more and more young people are doing. Matt went to meet one of them an up and coming young player who’s following in the footsteps of his grandad. (Thanks BTN)

In BTN we met a boy whose favourite sport is lawn bowls.

What is your favourite sport? Use your knowledge of persuasive texts topresent three points justifying your answer.

Now, making the move from primary school to high school is a big step. In some states you start high school in Year 7, while in others it’s a year later when you’re in Year 8. But that’s changing in some states and it’s causing a lot of debate. (Thanks BTN)

Is Year 7 the best time to start high school?

(justify your answer…proof read your comment carefully)

It’s hard for kids to avoid being exposed to gambling. There are adverts on TV and betting odds even appear during sports matches. Some former sports stars are saying enough is enough because they think it’s not setting a good example to kids. (Thanks BTN)

Should people be allowed to promote gambling during sports broadcasts?

Learning about the playwright William Shakespeare is usually something kids do in high school. But now his works are being studied in some primary schools too. So who is Shakespeare and why is it important for kids to study him?

Should primary school kids learn about Shakespeare?

The news has been dominated this week by a huge scandal that has damaged the reputation of Australian sport. A year-long investigation found that some sports stars have been breaking the rules by using drugs to improve their performance.

What should be the penalty for athletes taking performance enhancing Drugs?

(This was a great response by Alexander)

Right now, the general public do not have a clear vision of what is happening. In fact, watching the Footy Drug Summit on Channel 7 last night, it seemed that even Andrew Demetriou and other people at the centre of this saga were not sure themselves of what was happening. However, I believe drugs and doping should not be allowed in the AFL or any other sporting league in Australia. I think every player, coach and club doctors who encourage or take these drugs should be heavily penalised or given a life ban.

We’re bombarded every day with all kinds of ads for political leaders and their parties. And rest assured they’ll pull out every trick in the book when it comes to trying to influence how we think. It’s estimated around $10million bucks is coughed up by the big parties each week to try to get their message across on TV, radio, newspapers and the internet.

    (reference BTN website)

We have been doing a lot of work recently on persuasive texts and techniques that advertisers use to sell their products and services. If you were running for Prime Minister, how would you persuade the people to vote for you?

The ups and downs of yo-yos have been fascinating Aussie kids for generations.
Our first yo-yo craze was in the 1950s and they keep going in and out of fashion.

What other trends have been the “in thing” for kids over your lifetime?

Ask your parents or grandparents about what was the “in thing” to play with in their childhood.
